At Sunshine Society, we don’t start with a premade fabric catalog and pick the cutest print on the page.
Our prints are created specifically by us. Alli and Lexie come up with the next limited run of pajamas from the original idea to the colors, piping, ribbon, and final fabric. Every Sunshine Society collection is intentionally put together to feel playful, colorful, and a little unexpected.
Where do Sunshine Society pajama prints come from?
A print might begin with one of Lexie’s or Alli’s favorite memories, a trip, something our customers have asked for.
Travel has always been a source of inspiration for Sunshine Society. So have everyday things that make us happy like color combinations, places, patterns, objects, and moments that feel fun enough to turn into something wearable.
Sometimes there’s a deeper story behind a print. Take our Cloud set, for example. Growing up, Lexie had a favorite pair of blue pajamas with soft, cotton-candy-like clouds. She wanted to recreate that same nostalgic feeling, dreamy, playful, and a little bit magical, in a Sunshine Society print.
And other times the story is simply: we thought this would be really cute on pajamas.
Both are valid around here.
Are Sunshine Society prints custom designed?
Yes! Sunshine Society’s printed fabrics are custom designed rather than selected from pre-made print libraries.
We work with independent artists who help bring our ideas to life through hand-drawn artwork created specifically for Sunshine Society. It’s a bit of a process…in the best way. Alli usually starts with a mood board, a few rough sketches, and a creative call with the artist to talk through the idea, colors, and overall feeling she’s going for.
From there, the artist creates a first design and the tinkering begins. Alli is, admittedly, a little picky. A detail moves here, a shape gets adjusted there, and there may be a few rounds of “I love it, but what if…” before everyone agrees it’s just right.
Then Alli and Lexie hand-select the color story for each pajama set, using Pantone matches to get the shades exactly where they want them. They consider how the print, piping, ribbon, and other details all work together so the finished set feels cohesive—and unmistakably Sunshine Society.
That back-and-forth is part of what makes each print feel so intentional.
How does a Sunshine Society print go from an idea to pajamas?
It starts with the concept.
Once we know the general direction we want to explore, we work through the artwork and begin building the entire color story around it.
And we care about the little things.
A lot.
The colors aren't an afterthought. We look closely at the shades within each design and work through Pantone color matching so the finished fabric reflects the palette we envisioned.
Then we think about everything that surrounds the print:
-
What color should the piping be?
-
Does the ribbon need to match or contrast?
-
Which details make the artwork pop?
-
Does the whole set feel cohesive without feeling too coordinated?
-
Is it colorful enough?
-
Is it fun enough?
-
Does it actually feel like Sunshine Society?
Those decisions may seem tiny individually.
Together, they're what make a set feel finished.
Why does Sunshine Society use hand-drawn artwork?
Because we want our prints to have personality and we want them to be different.
Hand-drawn artwork gives us the freedom to create something that feels more personal than a repeating design pulled from an existing textile library.
It also lets us start with the story or idea first rather than beginning with whatever fabric happens to be available.
That distinction is important to us.
We're not trying to make another navy pajama set with white piping.
Nothing against navy and white piping.
We just think there's plenty of room in the pajama drawer for neon, color, ridiculous prints, and something that makes you smile before you've even had coffee.
We want our pajamas to bring you joy.
Even our solid colors get the same attention
Not everyone wants a head-to-toe print. We get it.
Sunshine Society also creates stripes and solids for people who want something a little quieter. But simpler doesn't mean cookie cutter.
The colors are still intentionally selected to fit within the Sunshine Society world.
Because whether a set has a big colorful print or one beautiful solid shade, the color itself is part of the design.
Why are some Sunshine Society prints limited?
Part of the fun of creating custom artwork is that we can keep moving.
Rather than relying on the same handful of prints season after season, Sunshine Society produces limited collections and continues developing new ideas.
That gives us room to experiment.
A memory can become a print.
A customer suggestion can spark an idea.
A trip can inspire a new palette.
And six months later, we may be completely obsessed with something else.
We like it that way.
Why put this much work into pajamas?
Because pajamas are part of your life. We spend about a third of our lives sleeping. Your pajamas should probably be something you actually love wearing.
They're what you put on at the end of the day. They're what you pack for vacation. They're what you wear around the kitchen with your family, on girls' trips, during slow mornings, and sometimes long before it's actually time for bed.
Sunshine Society started with the idea that those clothes could be comfortable without becoming boring.
And if we're going to put something into the world, we want it to feel considered.
The fabric.
The fit.
The print.
The Pantones.
The piping.
The ribbon.
All of it.
Pajamas can be practical and still have personality
There are plenty of beautiful pajamas in the world designed to be timeless, subtle, and serious.
We just happen to think there's also room for pajamas that are a little louder.
Something colorful.
Something unexpected.
Something you wouldn't find everywhere else.
Life's too short for boring pajamas.
